Srinagar, Nov 1 (KNO): Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq was placed under house detention again on Sunday, preventing him from delivering a scheduled religious sermon at Masjid Mehboob-ul-Alam (RA) in Zoonimar, Srinagar.
Expressing disappointment over the restrictions, Mirwaiz, in a post on X, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said: “Put under house detention again today ahead of a scheduled religious sermon at Masjid Mehboob-ul-Alam (RA), Zoonimar.
“Being punished for quoting the recently published International Crisis Group report on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir at Jama Masjid on Friday. Apparently, stating uncomfortable facts and endorsing recommendations, out of concern for the future of my people and genuine peace in J&K and the region, is not acceptable to the ruling regime. So be it.”
Mirwaiz was referring to his Friday address at Jama Masjid Srinagar, during which he highlighted findings of the International Crisis Group report, including concerns over prolonged detentions, political prisoners, restrictions on civil liberties and the need for meaningful political engagement and reconciliation.
Expressing sadness over the inconvenience caused to devotees, Mirwaiz further said: “Saddened that people looking forward to participating in the religious and spiritually inspiring Majlis-e-Waaz will be hugely disappointed.”
The post said the fresh restrictions had prevented him from fulfilling his religious responsibilities and addressing the gathering of devotees who had been looking forward to the scheduled Majlis-e-Waaz.—(KNO)
